This print was part of the Northern Trust Bank of Chicago's corporate art holdings. It was sold by the Fairweather Hardin Gallery, which has been closed for some time. Mrs Fairweather died in 2006. She was known to be aggressive in her sales to large corporations, so I find it interesting that the label on the reverse misspells the name of the piece as "Paumel" not "Pamul" as it is written by the artist on the front.

Condition: Everything I sell is vintage - it has lived a previous life. Some minor rippling of the paper under the matte at the top - common with this type of heavy print paper. Some very minor discoloration of the matte. Overall Very Good Vintage Condition.

Shipping: Item will not ship with glass. We will include a custom box and packing materials - this print is also backed with  1" x 2" boards making it a bit heavier - Shipped with frame - sample ship rate from Chicago to LA - FedEx Ground Home Delivery, Insurance, Tracking Info & Direct Signature Required: $56.00. Norman Cherner For Plycraft (Attributed) Set Of 4 Chairs

According to Modernism Magazine, Vol. 9, No. 4 Winter 2006-07 by Julie Moline titled: "Norman Cherner Deconstructed" - & I'm paraphrasing - "The Norman Cherner chair was originally designed in 1957 for Plycraft. The design had evolved around the same time that George Nelson and John Pile designed the "Pretzel" chair for Herman Miller. Herman Miller had commissioned Plycraft to manufacture the Pretzel. The Pretzel, with it's swooping arms that interlocked with it's back, was too expensive to produce and broke easily. Herman Miller took it out of production after only a year.

Plycraft hired Norman Cherner to refine the chair design and add a side version and they both sold well for Plycraft. However, Cherner had issues with Plycraft not paying royalties and attributing the chair to another designer - all eventually worked out in court. The Cherner chair went out of production around 1970. The sons of Cherner started their own company producing the chairs from the original specifications in around 1999, but with modern production methods, and the chairs are now sold through Design Within Reach and other retailers of modern furniture".

These 4 side chairs with padded seats from the 1960's have been modified from their original condition. Red was not offered in the 50's & 60's - there is an "orange" now offered by the sons of Cherner (it's really more of a red). These chairs have no original label - but the staples for the labels are still intact on the underside, as are the round stress holes that are always present on a Cherner chair. The backs also appear to have had pads at one point but were removed when the chairs were converted to red. Under the black leather seat pad, there is the original brown leather.

1970 Abstract Soak Stain Drip Oil Painting

A Color Field Painting From 1970 Signed "Grado '70"   Sold

In the manner of Mid Century artist Helen Frankenthaler with references to Mark Rothko and Arshile Gorky. 40" X 30".  Oil on primed canvas. Aluminum frame. Oil paint is diluted with turpentine and soaked or applied with a sponge and or dripped. "Untitled", Faye Franklin, American, b. 1921. Oil on canvas. 52" x 25". Artist's frame. Sold

Chicago artist Faye Franklin, 90, created this great Abstract Expressionist painting in the mid century years of the 1960's to the1970's.  It was exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute's "Art Rental" exhibition that ran from 1969 until it's closing in the 1980's. Vintage Mid Century Modern Abstract Expressionist Painting: "42 White Flames"

Vintage Abstract Expressionist painting - circa late 50's / early 60's  - "42 White Flames", artist unknown. Oil on board, 18" x 24". Artist self framed with slat wood. Very emotional, fluid piece with vibrant red points that radiate outward and up in whites, greys, blues, purples, oranges, taupes and black. The reverse has an interesting story on it - with what appears to be a price at some point in time. The reverse supports are great in how the artist was intent to insure the board remained flat - to emphasize the painterly brushstrokes on the front. Also on the reverse - two ways in which to hang the art - one ribbon, the other traditional artist installed wire and eyehooks. It's hard to determine if the ribbon or the wire is original - I'm guessing the ribbon is ...... I love the backs of paintings when they tell a story!
